Some residents of California's expensive Malibu waterfront community have turned mobile homes into luxury homes, which are not subject to property taxes because they are technically vehicles.
A bill proposed by the state legislature seeks to fill this loophole.
"They were able to avoid taxes by pretending it was a mobile home," said Jeffrey pram, a Los Angeles County tax assessor . ". “It’s wrong.
"The bill unanimously passed the state Senate committee on Tuesday, asking the owners of mobile houses that set up a foundation around the trailer to register it as personal property, not a vehicle.
This requirement applies only to new buildings.
