In this Instructable I will show you how to model and 3D print the optical illusion nameplate!
When you look at it, a phrase is displayed on the nameplate, but when you see the plate from the side, a new phrase appears and the other one disappears!
In this manual, I provide step-by-step instructions for designing and modeling the illusion using AUTODESK Fusion 360.
Even before you can follow and 3D print a sweet custom illusion nameplate, you have never used Fusion 360.
As shown in the second GIF, I printed my own nameplate with the same principal I showed here, which is very popular in the office.
You need to collect your material before you start: I hope you enjoy this note and surprise everyone with your own name board!
The illusion is simple.
All you need to do is figure out which two phrases you want to show and cut out a phrase at 45 ° diagonally.
There are three tips for making the illusion work: If you are a 3D modeling expert and a printer expert, you may have figured out what to do. Get to it!
If not, don't worry!
Follow the remaining steps and you will soon become an expert.
The following explains each step of modeling with Fusion 360 and setting up printing with Slic3r.
In this Instructure you will model everything in Fusion 360 as it is free for enthusiasts.
If you are using a different computer-aided design (CAD)
Software, just try to apply the same principle shown here, everything should work properly!
At this point, you should be satisfied with your basic phrases, font selection, font size and direction.
Before we 3D the plane text, we need to make a 45 ° middle plane so that we can see the thickness of the text from the perspective of "illusion" cut out in the future.
"Your model should now have your basic text and an intermediate plane.
Now you will create the text that will eventually pass through the underlying text of the entity.
At this point, your model should now have basic text and 45 °-oriented text, as shown in figure 4. 9.
In order to help you visually determine the thickness of the solid base text, you need to look at the model from the cutting point of view.
You should now look at your model from the point of view of the cut you are going to do later.
This should be shown in figure 5. 3.
Now you can make the flat base text into a solid 3D model.
Your model should now have a 3D body of basic text with flat text that you will remove in the next step, as shown in figure 6. 6.
Now is the time to cut the illusion text from the entity text.
Your model should now look similar to Figure 7. 6 and 7. 7.
Now all your letters are floating in space.
This is not practical for a nameplate.
We need to connect the letter with a thin strip material at the bottom (
If you feel creative, or somewhere else).
This can be done in the same sketch as the base font.
However, you may need to adjust at the end of this step and keeping the connector as a separate sketch can simplify some cases.
Your model is almost finished!
This is the trickiest step of the whole process and may require additional brain power and patience.
Unfortunately, due to the unlimited combination of words, fonts and sizes, there is no way to make sure your specific nameplate is one piece.
Models of disconnected bodies must be analyzed and they must be removed/repaired.
As shown in Figure 9, your model should now be completed. 4.
You should now also have a basic understanding of modeling in Fusion 260. Well done!
Tip: solving the problem should complete your model at this time.
It's time to save (
Although it is a good practice to keep it all the way).
Tip: fix slow slices.
If you find the slicer running too slowly, you can return and save the STL again using the easy deviation setting.
Since text can have a lot of rounded edges, which requires a lot of triangles to smooth, your STL file size can be huge!
For slicer, it will take a long time for these big files to be processed.
The smaller the file size of STL, the faster the slicer will run.
To save a smaller file, return to the 3D print refinement settings detailed in Figure 10. 6, 10. 7, and 10. 8.
Adjust the deviation slider to make the mesh more rough.
However, if you adjust the settings too rough, your model looks like it will become a polygon.
For more artistic parts, fitting is not a problem, such as the illusion that you can use a large deviation without noticing a change in the finished product.
After all, what are the thousands of friends?
It's time to convert the STL model into something that a 3D printer can explain.
The Slicing software will do this by "slicing" STL files into layers.
Each layer will populate the path to be followed by the printer.
These paths will be saved as gcode, the text language that the printer can read.
Now you can finally load the file onto the printer!
It's time to take your fantasy from the digital world to the real world.
