In the past month, at least seven commemorative cards have been stolen in parks and public places in the Midlands, United and Somerset counties.
The police are not sure whether the robbery is related or what the motive is.
It could be a prank, or someone stealing historical items for auction, or a thief lifting a bronze and brass plaque for sale as scrap metal, police said.
Investigators in the area have been searching for clues at metal yards and pawnshops, but police say they have found nothing so far.
"It's very disturbing," said William Palanti, head of the North Planfield Police Department . ".
Similar incidents of theft often occur across the country.
Recently, robbery may increase due to the economic downturn, police said, as people are looking for ways to make money quickly.
