In this tutorial, we will create customizable nameplates for your desk or gift.
The nameplate is fully customizable, so you will learn how to edit its size and text in this page.
For the manufacturing section of this tutorial, we will use the universal laser system laser cutting machine, but any laser cutting machine will be used.
This instructables assumes that you have the knowledge and access of the operator for the laser cutting machine.
For the customization section, we will use a program called Adobe Illustrator.
If you are a student, you will most likely get a free student download from your university.
Otherwise, it is very likely that the workshop where you have the laser cutting machine will have a permit somewhere.
If all else fails, you can get a free download for the first month here: Strictly speaking, this is not necessary, but the instructions will be in llluthers.
If you are very familiar with the different 2D design software, please feel free to use the analysis software function as we will mainly do basic customization.

Anyone with CAD experience can use Solidworks files and they want to have more customization options.
However, I will not introduce how to edit the CAD file.
Anyone who tries to follow different 2D design software other than Illustrator can use DXF.
Continue to open both DXF using the software you like.
For others, open the Illustrator file.

Measure the thickness of the material with your calipers.

If you can use Solidworks, simply change the hole size to the thickness of the material, save the model as DXF again, and open DXF in Illustrator.
If you are not familiar with Solidworks, I suggest you choose a different part because the learning curve of Solidworks is high and I will not introduce how to use it.

So we need to add some text!
In Illustrator, select \"t\" in the command bar in the upper left corner \"(

Click anywhere in the nameplate and type what you want to display.
For example, I can type my name \"Joshua Muller du\" and select the text size of 72 points to make it bigger.
I can also add a subtitle if I want, such as \"student supervisor at Jacobs Hall \".
To add this feature, just select the text tool again and type the subtitle as a separate text string.
After typing is complete, select arerror in the upper left toolbar.
This allows you to select an item.
Now you can select the text and reposition it.
To make very minor adjustments to the text position, select the text and move it using the arrow keys.
After you are satisfied with your text, open the file with your laser software.
The easiest way is probably to export the file.
Pdf, open it with laser operation software.
As I said before, I have to assume that you can use the laser and know how to use it.
Since each laser is different in terms of software and hardware, the way I set up the laser cut is not necessarily useful to you.
Once the file is ready, export it to the laser software and cut the part out.
Some reminders: please keep the back of the paper if you use acrylic.
If the laser is self-leveled and there is a material database, make sure you tell the laser the correct material type and the correct thickness.
If you have an old laser, make sure to focus it according to the material height and set the power, speed and ppi settings correctly for the plywood you are using.
After the cut is done, remove the pieces and go to the table or where you can assemble them.
First, peel off the back of the paper.
Pay attention to the focus marks on the paper.
If there is no backing, these burnt marks will burn into your acrylic resin and destroy it.
But acrylic looks primitive thanks to the paper.
After the paper is stripped, insert two side blocks into the holes on the front panel.
They should click in place well without having to push too hard.
If they don\'t fit, it may mean that the material you use is too thick.
In this case, try to go into illustrator and enlarge the entire file by 5%.
If you know how to use Solidworks, a better solution is to change the size of the hole width on the front piece.
Although it should be perfect for any material with a thickness between the two. 23\" and . 25\".
