They Passed the Test : Police: Distinguished Service Awards and Medals of Valor go to officers who in the face of death, faced down their fear, caught the bad guys and saved the good ones.

Reddondo Beach police Leonard Nott was speeding when he received a phone call apparently attempting suicide.
He soon planned the route to the Francesca Avenue apartment.
He thought about how to get close to the front door.
When there\'s nothing to consider, 14-
The old police veteran felt his hair on his neck stood up.
He thought: \"There is a good chance that I will get hurt on this phone.
\"I never felt so strongly about the phone before,\" Nott recalled this week . \".
Other officials said that since last September, Nott\'s foresight has only been surpassed by his courage, when he and other officials were surprised by a murder suspect during the escape, he was hit in the face.
Nott, one of 19 South Bay police officers, was commended on Thursday in Torrance for the bravery and outstanding service of the South Bay police and the war award board fire Medal.
He and six other officers who \"embody the best standards of their profession\" won the Outstanding Service Award at the ceremony of the Torrance Marriott hotel, and 12 others were awarded the Medal of Bravery for bravery.
Three Nott colleagues were commended for their outstanding performance on the day of the shooting.
After seven months of hard recovery, Nott is ready to return to work on Monday.

At about 1: 40, he heard two other cars being delivered to the apartment. a neighbor reported that there was a shooting in the apartment.
Nott thinks his colleagues may need some support.
He was in the apartment with three other officials and heard a car driving in a locked garage, suspected of suicide.
The garage door could not be opened, so officer David tanemank walked down the front door and found a man inside and was killed by three shots in the head.
Upon hearing that the car was still in the garage, taniman and Rodina rushed down the stairs inside, and Officer Nott and officer Roy Newton covered the car.
Taneman recalled this week that when he pushed the door to the garage, a 52-year-old man later put down his pistol and fired a shot.
The bullet roared over Rodina\'s head, and two officers killed Bollinger in response to an 18-shot volley.
Bollinger\'s gun rang the stairwell and hit Knott standing on the top floor, throwing him out the front door and landing in front of the apartment.
The bullet broke his chin, passed under his tongue, and popped out of his spine. -

Nott said he prayed and felt at ease when he spat and that he would live.
He thought of his wife, Linda, and his three sons. -
Mike, 15, Matthew, 11, and Steven, 5 months old.
\"I suddenly started to catch a lot of things,\" Nott recalled this week . \".
\"Something very important to me.
He also relied on years first. aid training.
He moved his feet and hands without paralysis and he breathed a sigh of relief.
He asked Newton to pinch the artery that delivered the blood to the head, but it didn\'t seem to slow down the bleeding.
He lay sideways in order to keep his airway open.
The most important thing, Nott says, is that he tries to stay calm because \"panic and shock have killed a lot of people.
\"It\'s really serious,\" Sgt said . \"

Surgeon at the port
The University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center took out most of the bullets, although there were still some debris near the spine of Nott.
He had a broken jaw and had to be closed for six weeks.
For three months, a metal \"Halo\" bracket has been screwed on his skull to secure his neck.
He drank a lot of milkshakes and communicated with visitors with notes.
Once the brackets and wires were removed, he began to slowly recover his strength and recover the 25 pounds he lost.
Other officers lined up to donate blood, visited religiously and bought a video recorder to entertain their comrades.
Nott said mentally he was ready to re-ride his motorcycle and re-join the SWAT team he served before the shooting.
But, he says, his stiff neck and occasional headaches tell him that it might be preferable to work at a desk at the moment.
Taneman and Rodina won the Valor Medal for leading police operations that day and successfully stopping Bollinger, who police say had just killed his lifelong friend, Gary Taylor.
Newton also received an Outstanding Service Award for providing covers and assisting Nott.
The award is presented by a committee of Chamber of Commerce and city officials from nine communities in South Bay for 16 years.

On last August, the Medal of Courage was awarded for the arrest of a suspect in theft.
Clifton was scratched by a bullet, but he continued shooting with Klempa until the suspect surrendered.
Clifton was discharged from South Bay hospital after being treated for scalp injuries.
The four officers of Inglewood also won the Medal of Courage.
On February 1989, police officers Ben Vargas and Thomas Baxter confronted Joseph Adams, a gang member who allegedly shot and killed a man several times.
The police killed Adams in a fierce gun battle.
On March 27, 1989, Steven kingtree and officer Edgar Johnson confronted a shooting suspect at an adult bookstore.
In the next shoot, Gentry was hit once.
He later lost his kidney during surgery, but he continued to shoot and helped Johnson catch the suspect.
On January, the squire resumed his full work.
Gunmen were jailed for attacking others with lethal weapons.
Three Hawthorne officers received an Outstanding Service Award, and a sergeant from Garden received a medal of courage because he prevented a restless man from committing suicide.
James Knes, David Grego, Patrick Lane, and officer Sgt.
Robert Michaelson surrounded the man. -
He took turns pointing his gun at himself and the officer. -
He negotiated with him for two hours before he finally gave up.
The gunman was later charged with the murder of two women, whose bodies were found in his home.
Police officer horthorne, John Austin, also won the Medal of Courage for leading a man at his burning home.
The smoke and flames were so strong that Austin was forced out twice before entering the building for the third time and rescuing the man.
