From the junkyard to the wildlife sanctuary in Cardiff, the junkyard here has become a thriving nature reserve with many different natural habitats in 32 acres of land.
Local Nature Reserves (LNR)
As early as 1973, life began when Cardiff City Council asked students from Howardian High School to help manage the site as a nature reserve.
After the school was closed, a team of local residents and enthusiasts managed and improved the area, and the work has continued since then.
The sanctuary has a wide range of habitats including fallen woodland, hedges, Meadows, reedbeds, swamps, ponds and bushes. The sanctuary has incredible flora and fauna, with more than 500 species in
Including sleeping rats (
Muscardinus avellanarius)
Amber Snail (Succinea putris)
Very unusual bee orchid (Ophrys apifera).
How to get to the hauditan local nature reserve just a mile and a half from Cardiff's bustling downtown, the hauditan nature reserve is near Colchester Avenue, with entrances to both Ipswich and Hammond roads.
Easy access by bus, service along Newport Road or Colchester Avenue, less than walking distance from bus-stops.
There are two ways to come in from Ipswich Road with a choice of walking.
One of them is a real wildlife corridor that runs between the busy South Road and the David Lloyd leisure center on the other side.
Although the modern world, transportation and industry have never been far away from hauditan LNR, it is indeed a paradise for wildlife.
