Sponsors of veterans activitiesSgt.
Joshua Michael of the Armyretired)
My name is Joshua Michael, US Army sergeant. Ret).
I have been married to my beautiful wife Darlene for 15 years.
I have a son, Ryan (14)
She also likes to hunt with my daughter Maci. 7).
Soon after 9/11 I joined the Army.
I was working as a paramedic in Amarillo, Texas, and when I heard about the attack, I was off work.
I know what I have to do.
I came out of a long list of soldiers and public servants;
This is my mission.
I knew we were going to war.
I signed up to become an infantry. I don\'t regret this decision.
I went to the Financial Times in February 2002. Benning, GA.
I had two trips in Iraq for the powerful 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault! ).
When we invaded Iraq in 2003, I was part of the Vanguard.
Our story began on a second trip to Iraq or shortly before.
We have been trying to have another child for years, but the deployment, the problems on the ground and I believe God himself has prevented us from joining the family.
Finally in April of 2005, we have the beautiful of baby girl.
She\'s amazing.
I was ordered to redeploy to Iraq in September, so I spent all my time with Dalin, Ryan and Mike.
When I was on my second trip, Maci was almost 5 months old and Ryan was 7 years old.
This time, Dai Lin is experienced and knows the exercises.
When I go to Iraq to do my thing, she will hold down the fort.
I called home in December to find a desperate Daylyn.
Maci had to do surgery on her eyes.
She did not have a normal developing tear tube and they had to correct it.
This is the first storm of the obstacles and tragedies that are coming.
In January 2006, another bad news came from Darlene. She had cancer.
It is in her thyroid gland and is wrapped around her trachea and harmonic band.
Maci was less than a year old and she was there alone.
Then I was injured for the first time during her radiation.
I was hit by an improvised explosive device and exploded backwards on my truck.
I was knocked out and suffered brain damage for the first time.
Neither her surgery nor my injury allowed me to go home.
We had too few people and I had to recover at the theater under the supervision of a neurologist.
Dai Lin also has some minor complications.
My second injury was in April 2006.
I was hit by an improvised explosive device again, but this time it was different.
It\'s not just a bomb, it\'s a penetration device.
It was designed to pierce the armor and kill inside, but luckily it wasn\'t big enough.
It went through the armor of the truck but only broke 3 ribs and my spleen broke. I survived.
On September 2006, I was injured for the third time shortly before I was ready to go home.
This is another brain injury.
I was sent to the Financial Times.
Take care of Sam Houston
At the same time, Dai Lin also experienced a series of heartbreak and challenges.
She took care of our children.
She keeps our family alive.
She supported me in Iraq with weekly care packages and demand lists;
She fought and won the battle against cancer.
She\'s amazing, to say the least.
When I decided to join the army, we had been married for 4 years, and we will celebrate the 15 th on September.
We fight together, laugh together, cry together, but the most important thing is to be together.
I have enjoyed almost 10 years in the Army and I will do 25 years if I can.
I retired because of the brain damage I suffered and got 2 Purple Hearts and 3 ARCOMS.
I won\'t change anything that happens.
I am a better man, husband and father because of my service.
I thank the army for allowing me to serve. Sgt.
